Visualizing a Rapper’s Lexical Evolution
Using Genius.com to extract Grammy Award-winning Tyler, the Creator's lyrics from his last 4 studio albums, I used MaxQDA to run a lexical search and code the rapper's use of profane language throughout his 61 songs.
After a cross-tab analysis of Tyler’s use of profanity in his songs per album, I created a Tableau dashboard to display the trend in his obscenity over time. Visualizing what I had predicted, the charts display a decrease in Tyler’s profanity with each album he releases. Both in terms of highest profane word count and average profanity ratio (swear words/total words), Tyler has evolved lexically to appeal to a wider audience and age demographic.
